{"id":546,"date":"2017-10-30T12:37:32","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T17:37:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/?page_id=546"},"modified":"2017-11-14T20:26:19","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T02:26:19","slug":"day-for-night","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/topics\/day-for-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Day for Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Day for Night<\/h1>\n<h5>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/topics\/day-for-night\/\">Lecture Notes<\/a> ] [ <a href=\"https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/topics\/day-for-night\/lab\/\">Lab<\/a> ] [ <a href=\"https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/topics\/day-for-night\/homework\/\">Homework<\/a> ]<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This phrase refers to a variety of approaches to making <strong>daytime footage look like it occurred at night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s usually done because <strong>shooting at night<\/strong> would be <strong>too<\/strong> <strong>expensive<\/strong> (nice lights, nice cameras, weird time of day for people) or <strong>impractical<\/strong> (weird time of day for people).<\/p>\n<p>Shooting at night is probably preferred, though, given one&#8217;s druthers; but here&#8217;s how to try and fake it.<\/p>\n<h2>During production<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Some people set the camera&#8217;s color temperature (WB) to 3200K &#8212; makes artificial lights become white, and gives a blue tint to sunlit areas and objects<\/li>\n<li>Use the camera&#8217;s histogram or zebra patterns to under-expose the shot until nothing bright is clipped.\u00a0 If you\u00a0use an ND filter to do this, the camera iris can remain wide open (like our eyes at night) yielding a dreamier, shallower depth-of-field. It might be OK to white-clip the sky if it will be replaced with stars, say.<\/li>\n<li>Add your own 5000K lights to key or fill-in important areas\/objects (that are too underexposed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>In Post<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If no blue tinting was done in-camera, some can easily be added at this point<\/li>\n<li>Brightness curves<\/li>\n<li>Glow, glare, vignette<\/li>\n<li>Adding synthetic lights (and glow, reflections of lights) to windows, streetlights, car lights, etc<\/li>\n<li>Sky replacement<\/li>\n<li>Crickets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>An Example Recipe<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Use the Lumetri Color effect to do a first pass:\n<ol>\n<li>Drop exposure a bit<\/li>\n<li>Boost contrast a bit<\/li>\n<li>Boost shadows until desired detail is brought back from pitch black<\/li>\n<li>Drop saturation a little<\/li>\n<li>Use curves to &#8220;un-shine&#8221; or &#8220;un-glare&#8221; any host spots<\/li>\n<li>Add a slight vignette<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Use a second Lumetri effect to add some blue tinting<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>Use curves to drop the levels of the red and green curves. It can take some time.<\/li>\n<li>Use the\u00a0<strong>Effect Opacity<\/strong> under the Compositing Options for the effect to do some fine tuning<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>If foreground subjects are too dark, use the various kinds of\u00a0<strong>Tracking<\/strong> to isolate foreground subjects from the background and add lighting with more Lumetri effect, or possibly 3D lights.<\/li>\n<li>Add <strong>synthetic lighting<\/strong> to <strong>streetlights, windows, car lights, store signs,<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n<li>Add some <strong>vignette<\/strong> if possible<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add some grain to simulate low ISO<\/strong> film\/video using the\u00a0<strong>Add Grain effect.\u00a0<\/strong>Be sure to choose\u00a0<strong>Screen<\/strong> for the blending mode within the effect controls:<br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-650 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screenshot-2017-11-14-16.36.16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screenshot-2017-11-14-16.36.16.png 392w, https:\/\/ciraldo.stream\/uwm-vfx2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screenshot-2017-11-14-16.36.16-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Day for Night [ Lecture Notes ] [ Lab ] [ Homework ] &nbsp; This phrase refers to a variety of approaches to making daytime footage look like it occurred at night.
