Project 1 (Still Project)

PROJECT 1 (still project)

Due February 13th at the beginning of class

Create two (2) distinct still images that attempt to capture one or more of the following:

  1. A subtle political directive, but without any text.
  2. A profound, personally transformative, moment, the feeling of this moment, the context of this moment, the space of this moment.
  3. A history, any history, anything that points to a momentous non-fictional moment of time not linked to your personal experience.
  4. The effect of something, anything (and not the thing itself.)

This is a technical and creative project. Handle your subject with maturity, insight, and subtlety.

Concentrate on a particular compositional strategy. Design the architecture of your two images with purpose. Create the kind of space that your ideas require. Place objects and choose colors with intent, not simply because “it feels right.” The more interesting projects, the best projects, will be those that take deliberation to be fully comprehended. (Look at paintings, drawings, photos that compel you. What’s happening compositionally, spatially, with color, line, weight?)

For inspiration on compositional architecture (and how one might use it to embed meaning) watch some of the animated “Art History” GIFs on this tumblr:
arthistorygifs.tumblr.com
You can look at them non-animated, too. For example, like this one here.

Some Important Rules

For this project, no human faces are allowed. Bodies are fine, including heads, but one should not be able to make out the features of the face.

Also, let’s forego text for now. For this project I want you to stay clear of text.

NO Copyrighted material unless it has been mostly modified beyond recognition.

The final result will be two (2) separate image files (either .jpg or .png) each being around 1280×720 in size.
